Junior Prep – Boys and Girls, Grade 1 to Grade 3
Where learning and fun are one
Nestled safely between age-old trees and surrounded by immaculate sports fields, lie the beautiful Fairlawn buildings, home of the St Andrew’s Junior Preparatory School.
In the Prep tradition, the ground floor of the original homestead has been extended to house the class and music rooms, while boarders, matrons and student housemasters live upstairs. This gives the school an atmosphere of a large family home.
Girls and boys at St Andrew’s Junior Preparatory spend their Grade 1 to Grade 3 years in an exceptional school: the warmth and happiness is tangible when one enters the gracious old building set in tranquil gardens. The staff focuses on moving each boy or girl to higher levels of understanding and functioning through a strong, concept-based curriculum. The sound academic foundation is broadened by Art, Music and Movement and Physical Education.
Looking to develop each child’s unique cognitive, physical, emotional and spiritual abilities in small classes is central to what Junior Prep teachers do every day. A full-time Academic Support teacher is available to work with learners on a one-to-one basis, ironing out early problems with numeracy and literacy.
Music lessons enable all children to learn the marimbas, percussion and recorder. Music appreciation and movement to music are integral parts of the curriculum. Learners may also start individual music lessons at Junior Prep. Annual musicals and pantomimes are not only opportunities to celebrate the pupils’ talents but are primarily seen as essential to the development of self-confidence, as each pupil in the school participates.

An outstanding Outdoor Education programme provides exciting ways in which to enrich learning and increase social and emotional growth. St Andrew’s Preparatory is the home of the National Children’s Arts Festival and hosts several SciFest workshops. This affords all pupils the opportunity to participate in these events.
In Grade 4 the girls proceed to the Diocesan School for Girls (Junior) and the boys to St Andrew’s Preparatory top campus. They will be taught differently, according to the varying needs of pre-pubescent boys and girls. In Senior School at St Andrew’s College and the Diocesan School for Girls, they will share classes once more.
